On-Exchange plans are those that provide health insurance options to those who are self-employed or those who do not receive insurance through a group employee plan. These “Marketplace” or better known as “Obamacare” plans provide the individual an option to shop for a health insurance plan that meets their medical needs.
The only time you can buy an individual health plan is during the open enrollment period. You can only buy a plan outside of the open enrollment period if you have a qualifying life event (i.e. loss of job coverage, divorce, moving out of area, and a few more that may qualify you for a special enrollment).
Medical history and pre-existing conditions do not prevent you from obtaining an On-Exchange plan. You can’t be denied and cannot be charged more based on your current condition.
With high deductible plans becoming more and more popular, it is important to consider having gap insurance which helps fill in the gaps that your health insurance plan may have in order to help reduce your out of pocket medical costs.
